Dominating the programme was an extraordinary performance of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an

Exhibition with James Mayhew painting ten pictures live to the music. DSO’s players inhabited the
scenes vividly finding the varied colours and moods, the brass gloriously chorale-like as they
demonstrated the promenade music. There was huge enjoyment for all in watching each painting
being created, the results projected on the big screen, and gasps of amazement as the creations
finished in time to the music.

…the DSO is again in fine fettle, making a rapid recovery from the ravages of the break forced by the Covid pandemic…
Fali Pavri is a regular guest with the orchestra and his performance was thoroughly idiomatic from start to finish.

A fine celebration of Beethoven from Dundee Symphony Orchestra
The programme, entitled “A Celebration of Beethoven”, did just that, taking three of that genius’s most popular works. If that sounds in any way hackneyed, the opposite was the case. The great feature of the evening was just how fresh each of the three works seemed. It really did seem as though they were being heard for the first time.

The Caird Hall was well and enthusiastically filled for the Dundee Symphony Orchestra under conductor Robert Dick in their Winter Concert, which started with an affectionate performance of Humperdinck’s Overture Hansel and Gretel
